The Honolulu Police Department, in collaboration with state sheriffs, has initiated a search for Rory Sitani, a Laumaka Work Furlough Center inmate who escaped yesterday. According to reports by KHON2, Sitani was last seen around 11 a.m. and wasn't authorized to leave the facility. His current sentence is for charges of criminal property damage and burglary. Sitani, now facing an additional charge for escape, stands at 5 feet, 11 inches tall, weighs about 290 pounds, has brown eyes and black hair, and is known to sometimes shave his head.
As the search intensifies, authorities have elevated the alertness of public, requesting any information that could lead to Sitani's capture. Hawaii News Now notes that Sitani is classified as a community custody inmate, indicating the lowest risk level in the work furlough program, which allows certain inmates to engage an employment during the day while returning to the facility at night.
The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has yet to provide an official statement on how Sitani managed to elude supervision at the center. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have stressed the importance of public assistance in ensuring Sitani's return to custody. This incident poses serious questions about security measures within the work furlough program, and officials may have to reassess protocols to prevent future occurrences.
As law enforcement officials continue their efforts to locate the escapee, they urge the public to remain vigilant and report any pertinent information. Anyone with details on Sitani's whereabouts is encouraged to contact 911 or reach out to the State Sheriffs directly at 808-587-1352.
