Following a multi-agency operation, two suspects wanted in connection with a March shooting incident at 400 Richmond Avenue have been apprehended. Melisa Aparicio Vergara, 31, and Hamza Abdullah, 21, faced charges of aggravated assault against a public servant, lodged by courts in the 337th and 185th State Districts, respectively. The arrest occurred yesterday, as per a news release published by City of Houston News.
The sequence of events began in the early hours of March 26, when HPD patrol officers responded to reports of a vehicle being chased near the Richmond Avenue location. According to the HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division Detective A. Garcia, the off-duty officer, they were working extra job, was wearing a full uniform at the time of the incident. Although the suspects in a black Jeep Wrangler fired multiple shots, the 28-year-old male victim, fortunately, did not sustain injuries. The suspects attempted to make an escape but their details, including their vehicle's license plate RGH9499, were documented.
Upon further probing, both Vergara and Abdullah became the primary suspects, leading to the filing of charges by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. Details surrounding the incident indicated their presence at the scene, with Vergara and Abdullah allegedly driving the aforementioned black Jeep Wrangler.
Bolstered by intelligence on the suspects' locations, a coordinated arrest operation was led by the HPD Narcotics Division as well as the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force. Both Vergara and Abdullah were eventually detained during the sting operation which occurred yesterday. They were then processed and booked into the Harris County Jail, with the booking photos released as part of the official announcement.
