Renowned Houston attorney Michael "Mike" DeGeurin has passed away at the age of 79 due to heart complications, as confirmed by his son on Saturday evening. Known for his criminal defense work, DeGeurin was a practitioner until his final days, displaying a passion for justice and the legal system that spanned over five decades.
Born in Austin and raised there before moving to Houston to begin his storied career, Mike DeGeurin quickly established himself as a formidable presence in the courtroom. As his son, Michael DeGeurin, remarked in a statement obtained by KPRC 2, "He was a fierce defender of people. He really believed in the justice system." The Houston Chronicle detailed that Mike continued to zealously engage with cases nearly up to his last moments, frequently inquiring about updates while hospitalized.
Perhaps most notably, DeGeurin is remembered for his successful exoneration of Clarence Brandley, a man wrongfully convicted and placed on death row. DeGeurin's craft extended to the defense of others in high-stakes scenarios, such as writer Vanessa Leggett and former city official Michael Yarbrough.
