Tragedy struck on the 9600 block of Southwest Freeway in two separate incidents as reports from the Houston police detail fatal encounters on the road; one victim lost their life in a crash in June and another in a hit-and-run collision involving a motorcyclist this past weekend. According to the City of Houston, a 69-year-old man succumbed to his injuries on August 9 after his Toyota Tacoma was struck by a black Acura RDX on June 18, a collision that also involved a grey Freightliner tractor-trailer truck, though the driver of the Freightliner was unharmed.
The investigation into the June crash revealed that the Acura's driver, Jessica Luty, was found to be intoxicated at the scene and has been charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated – her second offense, causing the Toyota's trailer to pivot into another lane, after which it was struck by the grey Freightliner, with Sergeant D. Hall and South Gessner patrol officers are continuing their investigation. In the more recent incident, a 37-year-old motorcyclist was struck and killed early Sunday morning by a white BMW 320i, the Houston police are still waiting formal identification from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences meanwhile the BMW driver fled the scene, launching a citywide manhunt, as reported by Hoodline.
The motorcyclist had been traveling eastbound on his black Harley Davidson when the BMW, also traveling in the same direction, struck him and caused his ejection onto a grassy area beside the freeway, where he was pronounced dead; the BMW driver subsequently lost control, went over the same area, then left the scene via the eastbound service road and has not been identified, with Sergeant E. Alejandro and Officer J. Leon of the HPD leading the inquest into this hit-and-run. Authorities have now called upon the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the capture of the BMW driver, with the community in shock and hoping for swift justice.
The department requests that anyone with relevant information should contact the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division at 713-247-4072, or to remain anonymous information can be shared through Crime Stoppers by dialing 713-222-TIPS.
