Commuters in Placer County faced significant delays this morning after an electric big rig caught fire on Interstate 80, prompting closures in both directions. According to KCRA, the incident occurred near the Emigrant Gap area when a Tesla truck veered off the eastbound lanes of I-80 and collided with trees. The impact caused the vehicle's battery to ignite, resulting in the release of toxic fumes and raising concerns over air quality.
As a precautionary measure, the California Highway Patrol closed the interstate to form a half-mile buffer zone to ensure public safety amid the hazardous conditions. Jason Lyman, a spokesperson for the CHP, mentioned on KCRA that "the toxic fumes are an inhalation danger." The area affected by the closure spans from Highway 20 for westbound traffic to Colfax for the those traveling eastbound, as reported by ABC10. Additionally, big rigs are being held eastbound at Applegate and westbound at the Nevada state line.
Responders first received the call at approximately 3:16 a.m., and it remains unclear whether there were any injuries as a result of the crash. Cal Fire units, alongside CHP officers, responded to the scene, which had escalated as the fire spread to the surrounding brush. Lyman noted on KCRA that coping with an electric big rig fire poses new challenges, stating that handling such incidents is a "newer thing" and requires different tactics compared to traditional vehicle fires.
Although initial estimates suggested that the roadway might be reopened by 8 a.m., conditions necessitated a reevaluation of those plans; the closures persisted beyond the estimated reopening time. In light of the emergency responses and the unique nature the incident, officials have yet to provide an updated timeframe for when I-80 will be cleared and safe for travel.
