The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CAHSR) has appointed Ian Choudri as its new CEO, a transition that represents a new chapter for the state's high-speed rail ambitions. Choudri, who is stepping into the role following Brian Kelly's retirement announcement earlier this year, boasts over three decades of experience in the transportation sector, including international roles on high-speed rail projects in France and Spain.

Choudri, who most recently held a Senior Vice President position at HNTB Corporation, is familiar with the dynamics of California's transport systems, notably contributing to the planned connection between Ontario Airport and the Rancho Cucamonga station for Brightline West's high-speed rail undertaking, according to KTLA. His expertise, officials hope, will steer the California project through its next stages of implementation.

During Thursday's announcement, CAHSR Board Chairman Tom Richards expressed confidence in Choudri's abilities, claiming that his experience with complex projects positions him well to lead the organization into passenger service. This sentiment was echoed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who described the project as being at a critical juncture and lauded Choudri's experience as "impressive" in a news release by the California Governor’s Office.

Outgoing CEO Brian Kelly has been recognized for securing funding and overcoming environmental challenges for the project, Newsom acknowledged Kelly's contribution toward bringing the dream of high-speed rail to near-reality in the state, arguably, a project that is envisaged to reshape California's future landscape of transportation.

With 25 active construction sites along the Central Valley, the Authority is poised to expand beyond its current 119-mile construction span. The crucial segment connecting Merced to Bakersfield aims to begin operations in the early 2030s, heralding a new era of high-speed transit spanning vast stretches of Californian geography. Choudri has expressed his eagerness to join the Authority's ranks and his commitment to driving the project forward, stating that the project comes once in a lifetime and has the attention of the nation, adding, "Let's keep building and get this done," as reported by KTLA.
