As we approach this year's Labor Day, Attorney General Kwame Raoul has drawn attention to the protection of Illinois workers through his annual report. The report, a testament to the past year's concerted efforts by his office, outlines several significant actions and settlements aimed at advocating and upholding workers' rights. Key among these efforts is the collection of more than $8.7 million in owed wages and $930,000 in penalties against companies that discriminated based on race or sex, according to the Illinois Attorney General's office.

"I am committed to continuing to fight for workers' rights," Raoul stated, encouraging individuals to contact the Workplace Rights Bureau with workplace concerns. His office's report not only details past settlements but also sheds light on a newly signed statute that extends protections for whistleblowers against workplace retaliation. A recent unanimous ruling by the Illinois Supreme Court sanctioned staffing agencies Elite Staffing Inc. and others for anticompetitive no-poach agreements, validating the sacrifices of workers who dared resist such industry collusion.

In reviewing the annual report, several high-profile cases emerge. These include the November 2023 settlement with Colony Display LLC, which, along with staffing agency Elite, resolved allegations of engaging in wage-fixing and no-poach ploys. Colony agreed to pay $1.2 million under these terms, while Elite will contribute $1.5 million, as per the Illinois Attorney General's office. Moreover, the settlement with Velasco Enterprises Inc. in January 2024 required a payout of $335,000 to truck drivers for unpaid work – a firm stance against the denial of overtime and owed wages.
