An inmate at the West County Detention Facility was pronounced dead yesterday afternoon following an incident that prompted an in-depth investigation by the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff and the DA's Office. The identity of the male detainee, arrested last Thursday on multiple felony theft charges by the San Ramon Police Department, has not been released to the public.
The situation unfolded around 1:56 p.m. when deputies discovered the inmate unresponsive. According to the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office, immediate efforts were made to revive the individual. Responding officers called for jail medical staff and paramedics, who together attempted life-saving measures on the inmate, who was in a single-person cell, but these measures were ultimately unsuccessful.
At the scene, the inmate was officially declared deceased. While the death is currently not being treated as suspicious, the official protocol for in-custody deaths involving law enforcement has been triggered, which includes a full investigation led by both local sheriff's deputies and the District Attorney's Office. This response ensures a thorough examination of the events leading up to the inmate’s death.
