A recent video gone viral has sparked significant concerns at Parkland High School, showing a coach reportedly slamming a student against the gym floor. The footage, captured by another student, rapidly gained traction online, prompting responses from both concerned parents and Ysleta Independent School District (YISD).
According to KTSM, YISD confirmed that "the incident is currently under investigation and the coach has been placed on administrative leave." Due to legal confidentiality constraints, the district was prohibited from freely providing further details. However, they assured that "Ysleta ISD follows policy on all personnel matters and is taking appropriate action."
In light of the incident, questions about de-escalation techniques and the training that YISD educators receive, especially those interacting with special education students, have been brought to the forefront. Hector Adame, an El Paso expert in behavioral management, noted the importance of understanding that individuals, particularly those with disabilities, might respond uniquely to different situations. Although specifics of the incident before or after the video are unknown, Adame couldn't help but empathize with concerned parents. He added that although he can't see what led to the incident or what happened after the recording stopped, he can't imagine how a parent would feel to see something similar happen to their child, as cited by KFOX14.
While the district has yet to release information regarding the specific training protocol for dealing with such incidents, they have been reached out to for comment. ABC7 reported the same issued statement from YISD as KTSM, confirming the coach's administrative leave and the ongoing investigation.
