Harris County has been rocked by the death of 31-year-old Jacob Trevino who was allegedly stabbed to death by a repeated offender, his neighbor Thomas Briscoe, who was out on bond at the time of the killing. Trevino's unfortunate demise marks him as the 210th individual in Harris County to fall victim to repeat offenders who were out on bond. Andy Kahan from Crime Stoppers highlighted, "Briscoe's got four felony convictions, He's been to prison multiple times," indicating a background fraught with prior convictions, according to FOX 26 Houston.
Despite the DA's office request for no bond given Briscoe's criminal record and propensity to reoffend, he was assigned a bond sum total to $30,000 for his charges, which included felon in possession of a weapon and burglary as detailed in the report by FOX 26 Houston. The stabbing took place at Trevino's residence in Katy, where the two lived on the same street and wherein a witness reportedly saw Briscoe fleeing the scene in a black sedan after the fact.
Subsequent to the incident, Covering Katy reports Briscoe was arrested on July 24 near the vicinity of the crime; Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies had initially responded to a distress call on July 21, discovering Trevino with multiple stab wounds following a fight in a residence. Witnesses testified seeing the assailant, identified as a black male in a wheelchair, flee in a vehicle believed to be a Mercedes Benz. Briscoe was eventually apprehended at a local hospital, with the reasons for his presence there not disclosed.
While detectives have not yet established a motive for why Briscoe would kill Trevino, the case continues to unfold as Harris County law enforcement urges the public to step forward with information; they have charged Briscoe with murder and he is currently held on a $350,000 bond in the Harris County Jail, this development comes amid escalating scrutiny towards Harris County judges regarding the issue of bond reductions for violent offenders that might enable their premature release before trial, as indicated in a statement obtained by Covering Katy.
The HCSO Homicide and Crime Scene Unit is leading the investigation and has appealed to anyone with additional information to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477) or the HCSO Homicide Division at 713-274-9100.
