In a concerted effort to curb the persistent issue of vehicle theft in Kern County, detectives of the Kern County Auto Theft Task Force (KernCATT) successfully located a stolen vehicle which led to the uncovering of a chop shop in Bakersfield; two men, Israel Cruz, 39, and Edgar Gonzalez, 38, now face several charges. According to a social media post by the California Highway Patrol, the incident unfolded when the detected vehicle prompted a suspect to flee on foot, and during the pursuit, detectives stumbled upon another stolen vehicle in the process of being stripped for parts.
The discovery was just the tip of the iceberg, with KernCATT detectives—comprised of members from the California Highway Patrol, the Bakersfield Police Department and the Kern County Sheriff's Office—revealing a more sinister operation while the suspects Cruz and Gonzalez attempted to escape but were ultimately detained. They were slapped with charges encompassing operating a chop shop, vehicle theft, possession of stolen vehicles, and resisting arrest kudos were given to the collective work of all agencies involved in bringing the suspects to justice.
The recent events underscore the broader mission of the California Highway Patrol, aiming to deliver the highest standard of Safety, Service, and Security. Kern County has been facing a tough battle against auto theft-related offenses, and initiatives like KernCATT are on the front lines fighting against these pervasive crimes that not only impact individual victims but also the wider community.
