The Kirkland Police Department is hosting its annual Community Police Academy. Residents, workers, and business owners are invited to learn about the daily operations and responsibilities of the police. The academy aims to provide a clear view of police work and build understanding between the community and the police force.

Set to commence on September 18, the eight-week program will include Wednesday evening sessions from 6 to 9 p.m., culminating on November 13. Participants will get to learn directly from officers and department staff, each bringing their unique area of expertise to the table, including topics such as De-Escalation, Investigations, and the usage of Unmanned Aerial Systems. The initiative is geared to not only equip participants with knowledge but also to actively engage them through hands-on activities and simulations that are to closely mirror real-life scenarios.

"Whether you're a resident of Kirkland, work or run a business here, or just like visiting, we hope you'll sign up for the program and get to know the police officers and professional staff who serve our Kirkland community and help keep it safe," said Councilmember Neal Black, in a statement obtained by Kirkland's official website. Eligibility for participation stipulates that applicants must be at least 21 years of age, live or work in Kirkland, and hold no prior felony convictions. To ensure an immersive experience, the class size is limited to 20 participants who are expected to commit to attending each weekly session.

Applications are already being accepted and those interested to apply for the program must submit their details through an online application form available on the KPD's website. The selection process will include a background check to confirm applicants' eligibility. The deadline for applications is set for September 4 at noon. Successful applicants will be notified of their acceptance via email or phone. For more information and to complete an application, visit Kirkland's news announcement.
