An incident unfolded on Saturday in Largo when police officers responding to a domestic battery call faced a tense standoff with a man who allegedly assaulted his father. FOX 13 News reports that Adam Dearth, 33, allegedly hit and dragged the 66-year-old victim back into his mobile home before brandishing a machete at the officers when they attempted to intervene.
The confrontation escalated rapidly, with Dearth refusing police entry and retreating inside his home at 12928 Seminole Blvd, according to a report by Tampa Free Press, where he attempted to create another dangerous situation by filling the residence with propane gas, however, the officers managed to hastily shut off the supply and likely averted an explosion or fire.
As detailed by IONTB, Dearth's aggressive actions prompted a response from specialized units, including the Largo Police SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiations Team, and Tactical Reconnaissance Unit. Despite ongoing attempts from crisis negotiators, Dearth remained inside the barricaded home refusing to cooperate with law enforcement.
Ultimately, after an extended standoff, Dearth surrendered without incident, Tampa Free Press indicates that he is now facing multiple charges, among which are counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, false imprisonment, and domestic battery on a person 65 years or older indecent that we often hear of but can't turn our gaze from for too long less we ignore the wounds of those hidden behind the closed doors of supposed sanctuary.
