Last Thursday night, a North Las Vegas Police Department patrol vehicle became an unintended target in a DUI incident. The event unfolded on southbound Interstate 15 near Cheyenne Avenue, where initially, an officer was handling a two-vehicle collision. According to News 3 Las Vegas, the officer had the vehicles move to the freeway's shoulder and was awaiting assistance from the Nevada State Police when the crash occurred.

The perpetrator was 52-year-old Yamila Perdomo-Hernandez, who, in a gray Volkswagen sedan, failed to steadily maintain her travel lane and sideswiped the stationary patrol vehicle. As fortune would have it, the officer was not seated inside the car and emerged unharmed. After exhibiting signs of impairment, Perdomo-Hernandez was arrested and charged with DUI alongside failure to maintain a lane of travel. She was booked into the North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center following the incident, as per News 3 Las Vegas.

In the wake of the accident, the North Las Vegas Police Department issued a statement that said: "We want to remind the community to don't drink and drive, find a sober driver, and to slow down and move over as you approach stopped emergency vehicles." This alert was sourced from 8 News Now, reinforcing a continuous effort to enhance roadway safety.

As the Labor Day weekend nears, the North Las Vegas Police Department has planned to jointly enforce traffic rules with other valley law enforcement agencies, focusing not only to curb impaired driving but also to stop distracted and reckless behaviors behind the wheel. Their latest statement aims to direct prevent such occurrences and to steadfastly protect both the enforcers of the law and the community they serve.
