A recent collision on West Sahara Avenue resulted in the death of a male pedestrian, marking yet another grim milestone in Las Vegas's traffic-related fatalities this year. The incident, involving a pedestrian in a motorized wheelchair and a 2010 Lexus RX, occurred late in the evening on August 2.
According to a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) press release, the Lexus was traveling west on Sahara Avenue when the pedestrian, attempting to cross east of South Valley View Boulevard, was struck. The pedestrian, whose identity has yet to be disclosed pending notification, was outside a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision. After the impact, which redirected the victim onto the roadway, the vehicle came to a controlled stop.
Emergency responders transported the individual to the University Medical Center's Trauma Unit, where, despite medical efforts, the victim was pronounced dead. This unfortunate event has raised the number of traffic-related fatalities within the LVMPD jurisdiction to 90 for the year. The driver of the Lexus, identified as 40-year-old Mark Yrizarry of Las Vegas, Nevada, remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement, showing no signs of impairment.
The investigation of this fatal encounter is still underway by the LVMPD's Collision Investigation Section. While the names of victims are typically withheld until relatives are informed, the police have released the name of the pedestrian, hinting at a possible nearing of conclusion to their notification process.
