This weekend marks the last chance for visitors to the Illinois State Fair to dive into the bounty of fish and fishing-related experiences located within Conservation World. The 30-acre sanctuary in Springfield's northwest corner comes alive with activities tailored for families and outdoor enthusiasts, designed to celebrate and educate about Illinois' aquatic life. Up until August 18, the fairgrounds will house everything from giant aquariums to fly-fishing demos, according to details from a recent release on the state's official website.

Kevin Irons, the assistant fisheries chief for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, announced some exciting additions this year. "We have all the traditional favorites, including youth fishing and the giant aquarium filled with native fish, but we've also added some new things this year, including a sea lamprey, a catfish raceway, and fishing opportunities for anglers with disabilities," he mentioned in an announcement. Illinois.gov details that Conservation World will be teeming with activities from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., daily.

Among the highlighted features is a 2,800-gallon aquarium that gives visitors a glimpse into the underwater world of native species such as alligator gar, muskie, and bass. With a fleet of additional tanks on display, patrons can expect an up-close look at other native fish and reptiles—presenting an ecosystem's corner carefully curated for educational encounters. Plus, banners showcasing record-breaking catches will be on display for those avid fishing enthusiasts keen on comparing their personal bests.

"Fishing Has No Boundaries" is another initiative that Irons and his team are proud to support, providing materials and guidance for fairgoers who require assistance with fishing, including use of motorized reels from an accessible dock. For foodies, the Flippin' Fish Shack serves up Copi tacos and burgers, a tasty way to rebrand invasive carp as a local, sustainable food source. More than just an exhibit, "it's a healthful, responsibly caught, locally sourced protein source," per the state's announcement.
