Lewisville Grand Theater is opening its doors to artistic whimsy with two new exhibitions starting August 17th, each highlighting the homegrown talents of local artists. The first show, "Lap of Luxury," is the brainchild of Dallas-based ceramic sculptor Ariel Bowman, who clinched the title in the Visual Art League of Lewisville's Fresh Ideas 2023 competition.
The exhibition will showcase a series of prehistorically themed sculptures that whisk us back to an 18th-century aristocracy, where the status symbols were not fossilized bones but rather Rococo-styled lap dogs, yet in a unique twist, Bowman's art featuring prehistoric mammals as these indulged pets, a thought that weaves together opulence and ancient beasts. “Lap of Luxury” threads a narrative challenging how humans have, across centuries, bent the animal kingdom to their aesthetic will - this tale is rooted in the marriage of animal breeding and domestication with natural wonders untouched by the human hand.
According to the City of Lewisville, Ariel Bowman is not only an accomplished sculptor with a fine arts degree from the Kansas City Art Institute and a master's from the University of Florida, but her work also graces spaces like the Belger Arts Center and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. The "Lap of Luxury" will be on view from August 17 through September 14, with an opening reception set on the first day from 7 to 9 p.m.; the gallery itself welcomes visitors from Tuesday to Saturday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and during public events at the Grand.
