Kaua'i residents will need to adjust their waste disposal routines as Līhu'e Refuse Transfer Station temporarily shuts down for renovations. The planned upgrades, scheduled from September 11 through November 1, will improve operational efficiency and incorporate critical environmental protections. County of Kauai reports that Department of Public Works Engineer Troy Tanigawa stated, "These renovations will allow our refuse transfer station to operate more efficiently while providing environmental safeguards." He also acknowledged the inconvenience caused by this closure and extended appreciation for the public's understanding.

This temporary closure is a part of the broader Island-wide Refuse Transfer Station Improvements project that affects multiple locations, including Hanalei, Kapa‘a, and Hanapēpē. The primary goal is to address concerns related to water quality standards, and stormwater discharges. During the shutdown period, community members are directed to the alternate refuse transfer stations in Kapa‘a and Hanapēpē for their waste disposal requirements.

For everyday refuse, green waste, tires, motor oil, and propane tanks, Kauai.gov recommends using Kapa‘a refuse transfer station at 5051 Kahi Road, or the Hanapēpē refuse transfer station at 4380 Lele Road. Those with bulky items larger than 3 feet, such as furniture or mattresses, must head to the Kekaha Landfill for disposal. On the other hand, scrap metal, appliances, and eWaste can be directly taken to Puhi Metals Recycling Center located on Puhi Road.

The Kaua‘i Resource Center, located adjacent to the closed Līhu‘e RTS, remains operational. It continues to accept household batteries, fluorescent lights, and packaging material, alongside the distribution of backyard composting bins. "Reynolds Recycling will continue to operate the HI5 Redemption Center Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed for lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m.," as detailed on the County of Kauai official website. For residents seeking more information on the refurbishment and disposal alternatives, the Solid Waste Division can be contacted at 808-241-4841 or through their online portal.
