The Lockhart community is grappling with the aftermath of its first homicide of the year, which claimed the life of a local 20-year-old. Carlos Sanchez was found mortally wounded from gunshot injuries early Friday morning, the Lockhart Police Department reported to KXAN. The tragic incident unfolded near S. Colorado and Prairie Lea Streets.
According to authorities, the emergency call placed just before 3 a.m. did not originate from the scene of the shooting but from a different location where a firearm was discharged at a home near Rosewood and Trinity Streets. On arriving, emergency responders swiftly transported Sanchez to a hospital in Kyle, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after 4 a.m. CBS Austin notes that the incident appeared to be a targeted attack linked to a disturbance reported the previous evening.
Currently, the police have zeroed in on a juvenile as a person of interest in the homicide inquiry. However, Lockhart Police Chief Gary Williamson has clarified, "the incident was targeted and not random," in information provided to the media. No arrests have been made as of yet.
