Long Beach residents were met with news of violence and police action in their city after incidents that occurred on the night of August 18, 2024. As stated on the Long Beach Police Department's official blotter, homicide detectives are currently investigating a murder in the 600 Block of East South Street. In a separate incident, Long Beach officers were called to the 5800 block of Lime Avenue around 11:52 p.m. to investigate a reported shooting. The responding officers located an unoccupied vehicle that had been hit by gunfire. Despite the serious nature of the incident, there were fortunately no injuries reported. The suspect or suspects managed to flee before officers arrived at the scene, and they are actively striving to identify any individuals involved and determine the motive behind the shooting. The investigation into this no-hit shooting is ongoing, according to the official report.
The Long Beach Police Department did have a measure of success amidst these troubling occurrences. Officers conducted a traffic stop near Alamitos Avenue and New York Street around 6:36 p.m., which led to the discovery and seizure of two firearms. During the traffic stop, the passenger was found to have a warrant for his arrest. The passenger, who was also a prohibited possessor, was detained and later arrested once officers recovered the weapons. The diligent work of the officers ensured these firearms were taken off the streets, highlighted by the LBPD's recognition of the "great work officers" performed during their routine patrol and investigation.
