Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is poised to take the stage on the Democratic National Convention's (DNC) first night in Chicago, where she is expected to underscore her longstanding camaraderie with Vice President Kamala Harris, NBC Los Angeles reports. Her speech, slated for 3:45 p.m. PT, will likely delve into their shared history of advocacy on behalf of children and families back in California, shedding light on the significance of Harris's nomination, wherein she stands as the second woman ever poised to clinch a major party's nod for the presidency.
In an encounter, Bass happened to be seated near KTLA reporter John Fenoglio on a flight bound for the convention—the serendipity yielding an impromptu interview during which Bass expressed her anticipation, “I am very excited,” she told Fenoglio, “I’m so excited to be a part of history.” The mayor affirmed her confidence in Harris's leadership proclaiming, “[Harris is] absolutely the next President of the United States,” per an interview on board the plane, as detailed by KTLA.
Bass's engagement at the convention is part of a lineup of notable Democrats, set against a thematic backdrop dubbed "For the People." The evening's highlight is President Joe Biden's keynote address, with First Lady Jill Biden also among the array of esteemed speakers. Mayor Bass is reported to be making a prompt return to Los Angeles following her address, with her office indicating her Tuesday departure from Chicago—the DNC is scheduled to continue through Thursday.
