A Lynn man is facing murder charges after his brother's pregnant girlfriend was found fatally stabbed in her home. Zachary Vozzella, 26, pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon following the death of 25-year-old Brianna Welsh.
Authorities arrived at Welsh's residence yesterday morning for a wellness check initiated by her mother and discovered her with multiple stab wounds, as reported by WHDH. Vozzella had been living in the same Lynn apartment with Welsh and his brother, Brendon. The investigation led to Vozzella's arrest, with law enforcement recovering the alleged murder weapon and two key fobs linked to the apartment.
Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker described the loss as "unbearable" for Welsh's family and was quoted by WHDH stating, "While their loss cannot be repaired or remedied, I hope that our efforts to seek justice on her behalf assures them that we and the community support them." The tragedy is compounded by the fact that Welsh was three months pregnant at the time of her death, a detail highlighted by Zachary Vozzella's attorney.
Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson expressed his condolences and shock over the heinous crime, "I am so sorry for the devastating loss of Brianna Welsh," Nicholson said, his statement further underscoring the horror. "That she was an expectant mother makes this even more tragic, chilling, outrageous, and impossible to comprehend," according to WHDH. Vozzella has been ordered held without bail and is due back in court in September.
Meanwhile, a separate but related legal matter precedes this case, as Welsh's boyfriend, Brendon, was arraigned on charges of assault and battery on a pregnant victim and assault and battery on a family member. He is set to appear in court again on August 6, 2024, as noted by WHDH. Welsh's family, present during Vozzella's arraignment, were understandably emotional and declined to comment to reporters.
