
In an event highlighting the critical importance of firearm safety, a Madison Heights couple is facing charges after their son injured himself with an unsecured firearm. The incident involving the 9-year-old boy occurred last Friday when the child accidentally shot himself in the hand with a gun that was not properly secured, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit.
Jessie Gean, 25, and her husband, Jacob Zachary Gean, 27, have both been charged with felony firearms-safe storage violation under Michigan's latest safe storage law which mandates that guns are locked away to prevent access by children according to ClickOnDetroit; the boy suffered the self-inflicted gunshot wound within the vicinity of their home on Palmer Street near Diesing Drive.
Local authorities were alerted to the incident when the child was taken to Corewell Health in Royal Oak, where he was stated to be stable and is expected to make a recovery. Following the incident, the parents were arraigned in the 43rd District Court; they were each granted a $50,000 personal bond, and with the charges that were pressed, they potentially could face up to 10 years in prison as elucidated by Audacy, in the wake of the disturbing occurrence, Madison Heights Police Department's Lt.
