A 44-year-old man caused a standoff with SWAT on the north side of San Antonio this past Friday after randomly firing a long gun into a neighbor's house. The incident, which began around 2 p.m., prompted police to respond to an active shooter situation on the 5700 block of Jones Falls Drive. As per reports from KENS 5, the suspect discharged approximately seven shots into the neighboring residence, the motive for which remains unclear.
When the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) arrived at the scene, they encountered the suspect brandishing what was described as a "long gun." The nature of the standoff intensified when, holding the firearm, the suspect momentarily appeared from his dwelling then retreated back, playing a precarious game of exposure with the officers who had established their positions of safety, according to a statement obtained by News 4 San Antonio.
The law enforcement officials on the scene, including SWAT and negotiating teams, worked to secure the area and evacuate any individuals at potential risk. A tactical approach was employed, which involved setting up a perimeter, as the suspect's actions shifted from erratic to a temporary barricade situation inside his home.
During the standoff, SAPD Sgt. Washington Moscoso detailed the suspect's erratic behavior, stating, "The individual would come out every so often through the garage door, he'd open the door with a gun, holding a weapon, and then close the garage door. He'd come out, emerge from the front door, close the door, so he was kind of playing a cat and mouse game," as reported by News 4 San Antonio. The tense situation was finally resolved after SWAT negotiators effectively communicated with the suspect who ultimately surrendered without further incident or injury.
The suspect, already known to the authorities for past offenses, was taken into custody and is expected to face charges for deadly conduct. An ongoing investigation may lead to additional charges being filed. Throughout the course of the standoff, no injuries were reported from within the shooter's home or that of the neighbors', mitigating what could have otherwise escalated into a tragic outcome.
