
The Berkeley Police Department detained a 62-year-old man, identified as Mark Christopher Dowling, on Monday about a fatal shooting at the Ursula Sherman Village, a West Berkeley homeless shelter. According to an official statement from the Berkeley Police Department, the shooting occurred on Sunday, and the victim, a 37-year-old man, was found with multiple gunshot wounds.
Responding officers attempted life-saving measures, but the victim, whose name has not been released, succumbed to his injuries. The arrest came after a swift investigation led to the identification of Dowling as the suspect and procuring an arrest warrant. The authorities located the suspect the following day, who was parked in his vehicle near Fourth Street and Camelia Street. Notably, the police found several guns and ammunition inside Dowling's vehicle during the arrest.
The Alameda County District Attorney's Office has charged Dowling with PC 187—Murder. KTVU reported that Dowling is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.
In their public address, the Berkeley Police highlighted their zero-tolerance policy for violence and expressed gratitude for the community's support in the aftermath of the tragedy. Dowling's arraignment is at 9 a.m. today at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.
