A man identified as Asante Taj Omar Miller has died following an hours-long SWAT standoff near the south campus of Ohio State, as ABC6 has reported. The incident, which led to Miller's death at around 1:15 p.m. yesterday, remains shrouded in ambiguity, with law enforcement providing few immediate specifics about the circumstances.
The protracted confrontation began in the early hours and lasted through the morning. According to FOX28, the vicinity was swarmed with police vehicles and personnel from Columbus police, Franklin County, and Ohio State patrols, effectively barricading residents from their homes.
While the standoff unwound into chaos, a neighbor out for a daily routine with his dog found himself a witness to the turmoil. He recounted to ABC6 a glimpse of a figure dressed entirely in black attempting to escape from the conflict's epicenter.
Miller's former roommates have also come forward, expressing their dismay and noting past efforts to aid him, which seemingly went unreciprocated in the end. A neighbor captured this sentiment in an interview with ABC 6's Jeremiah Wilcox, the local community now reels as it confronts the weighted question of how such events culminate within its own backyard.
