On Thursday, the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office announced that Martin Lackey-Garcia was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for a series of stabbings that left two dead and two wounded at Carmichael's Wellness and Recovery Center in 2020. Lackey-Garcia's violent rampage began when he met with counselor Eileen Stanwick and killed her after becoming enraged, he then continued his assault by attacking receptionist Tracy Drake who attempted to intervene, resulting in fractured ribs and a collapsed lung but she survived her injuries, according to ABC10.
Following the attack on Drake, Lackey-Garcia proceeded to chase employees through the center, where employee Charles McLellan fell and was stabbed in the back by Lackey-Garcia yet survived the attacker then reentered the office to fatally stab Paul McIntyre. According to CBS News, Lackey-Garcia was found guilty in July of two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder before initiating his final, fatal attack inside the office.
A significant piece of evidence in this case came from home security camera footage which showed a homeless individual, Stephen Todd Ward known as 'Cowboy,' in a heroic act as he followed the assailant and tackled him down, holding him until law enforcement agents arrived to make the arrest. Wards’ brave intervention likely prevented further bloodshed.
