Manatee County is investing in the mental health of its veterans and the rejuvenation of its natural spaces, according to recent budget measures approved by the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC). The commission is setting funds in motion to not only provide recreational areas but also vital support services for community members in need.
With an unanimous decision, the Commissioners stamped a $4 million GMP (Guaranteed Maximum Price) for the upcoming Hidden Harbor Park in Parrish. This new greenspace, planned across from the existing Ft. Hamer Park, will feature amenities designed to enhance both the utility and enjoyment for local residents—parking, pavilions, a playground that respects the diverse needs of all children, and more, as reported by Manatee County officials.
Additionally, the BOCC affirmed their commitment to addressing mental health among veterans by backing Operation Warrior Resolution. This initiative will continue to receive funding in the amount of $85,775 for the fiscal year 2024-25, aiming to provide specialized mental health treatment for veterans and their family members grappling with psychological hardships.
The county's natural habitats are also getting a financial boost. The BOCC has shown support for oyster restoration efforts that bolster the resilience of our coasts and enrich the ecosystem for fishermen and local wildlife. In fact, with over $4.6 million in grant funding and an additional $263,000 leveraged, Manatee County's oyster restoration projects present measurable gains not just for the environment but for the recreational and commercial activities that thrive along our shores.
