The City of Maricopa has set into motion proposals for a brand new City Gym and Field House complex. Slated for construction at the location of the existing police substation on 17985 N. Greythorn Dr., the project's unveiling indicates a revitalization of community infrastructure, aiming to encompass a variety of sports facilities including basketball, volleyball, and pickleball courts, along with batting cages, as per an announcement on the official City website.

While discussing the design of the new complex, the project, dubbed GPA24-02 & ZON24-01, will see the police substation transformed into a recreational haven for residents, designed to blend in with its desert surroundings with an aesthetically pleasing desert color palette. Interestingly, despite being designed for sporty activities, the proposed maximum height of the building is 42 feet, which is considerably higher than a standard gymnasium.

Residents interested in learning more or voicing their opinions on the development can attend a neighborhood meeting scheduled for September 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Maricopa Library & Cultural Center. Located at 18160 N. Maya Angelou Drive, this meeting is the first in a series of public engagements, offering citizens an opportunity to discuss the plans directly with city officials.

A heady schedule of meetings is planned by the city, with the Planning and Zoning Meeting set for October 14 at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, located at 39700 W. Civic Center Plaza. Added to this, a date of November 19 at the same time and location has been earmarked for the City Council to conduct another public hearing, as listed on the city's website. City planner Alexander Bosworth can be contacted for those looking to make written comments, or for anyone requiring the information in Spanish.
