Maui residents in need have a new resource to turn to as the Maui Police Department announces their Mobile Medical Educational Unit (MMEU) Program servicing the houseless community at Ho'aloha Park, Kahului. Operating on Mondays from 9 am to 12 pm, the MMEU offers a range of essential services in partnership with local agencies. According to the Maui Police Department's post, this innovative program is set to provide support ranging from food stamps and non-critical wound care to mental health counseling and wellness assessments.
Community members can access more than just basic health services. The MMEU program also extends its assistance to include a swipe of financial services and animal care/check-ups, recognizing the interconnected nature of these needs for many houseless individuals and families. These services have been possible through a collaboration with multiple community partners such as Aloha House, the Department of Health, and Goodwill Hawaii. Each organization brings their expertise and specialized resources to ensure a comprehensive approach to supporting Maui's houseless population.
The initiative also underscores a commitment to the youth by including services from the Department of Education's "Homeless Outreach for Unsheltered Youth" program, ensuring that the youngest and most vulnerable among the houseless community are not overlooked. Additional partners include the Maui Aids Foundation, Maui Humane Society, and private practitioners, making it a robust coalition poised to address complex health and wellbeing challenges in the community.
