
East Boston's Patrick J. Kennedy Elementary School celebrated a key phase of its expansion plan with a topping off ceremony yesterday. Mayor Michelle Wu, along with Boston Public Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper and other local officials, gathered to commemorate the final beam being placed on the school's new addition. This $21.5 million project aims to not only upgrade the facilities but also to create an accessible and safe learning environment for all its approximately 300 students. according to the City of Boston's official announcement.
“Every student deserves a school environment that is safe, welcoming, and nurturing,” said Mayor Wu, as she addressed the crowd at the ceremony. Superintendent Skipper added, “Projects like this show what happens when we come together and put the needs of our young people first” The project, which commenced in April 2024, includes a two-story addition featuring a new entrance, a stairwell, an elevator, and accessible restrooms, all mentioned in the City of Boston's press release.
The topping-off event enabled community members and city officials to make their mark by signing the last beam, a gesture symbolizing collaboration and progress. The steel structure completion is just one part of a significant overhaul that promises better facilities and opportunities for East Boston's youth. The upgrade extends to the existing structure as well, which is slated to receive new windows, a heat pump system, and various safety enhancements, as detailed in the City of Boston's official statement.
A newly designed exterior stair and sidewalk ramp access from Bennington Street will replace underutilized asphalt, providing a refreshed space for students to play and learn. “We are thrilled to have reached this construction milestone,” Public Facilities Department Executive Director Carleton Jones conveyed, highlighting the dedication to efficiently progress toward creating a top-tier educational environment, as reported by the City of Boston.
While partial renovations will be ready for the 2024-2025 academic year, the full completion of the addition and other improvements is set for the following year. This phased approach ensures that the Patrick J. Kennedy Elementary School's expansion meets the needs of the students while minimizing disruptions to their day-to-day learning experiences.
