The vibrant tapestry of Hispanic heritage is set to be celebrated in Mesa with a host of events spanning from September 15 to October 15. In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Mesa Public Library has curated a series of cultural festivities and activities designed to pay homage to the rich histories and contributions of individuals with roots in Mexico, the Caribbean, Spain, Central, and South America. These events are geared towards residents of all ages, empowering the community with opportunities to connect with and immerse themselves in the diverse Latino cultures that form part of the American mosaic.
Beginning the month's festivities ahead of time is the Bilingual Book Buddies program on September 9, inviting children aged 5-10 to dive into language learning through engaging books and games at Red Mountain Library. Following this, on September 14, the Family Matinee will present the much-loved animated feature, 'Coco,' at the Main Library, setting the pace for an enriching cultural month with a family-friendly environment. Kicking off at 2:30 pm, it promises to be a heartwarming way to keep the younger audience engaged in the narrative of familial bonds stretching across life and death—a central theme of Hispanic culture.
Aspiring young artists get their chance to shine at the "I am an Artist: Diego Rivera" event on September 19. Kids are invited to channel their inner muralist, reminiscent of the iconic works of Diego Rivera, with their creations taking the spotlight in the Youth Activity Room at the Main Library. In a twist of storytelling and silliness, author Marlene Davis will be drawing in the young and eager minds on September 28 with "Cuentos en Español," a storytime mix of songs and stories catering to 3-5-year-olds at Red Mountain Library.
The community's connection to ancestral roots will be embraced with the setup of a traditional Dia de Los Muertos community altar, from October 1 to November 2, at Red Mountain Library. Participants can add personal tributes to deceased loved ones, continuing a profound celebration of memory and life amidst the library's backdrop. Author Marlene Davis returns with her "Musical Bilingual Storytime" on October 1 and 15, merging music with bilingual tales tailored for preschoolers, expanding their cultural and linguistic horizons.
For those interested in the thrill of Mexican wrestling, the Lucha Libre experience arrives at the library on October 10, complete with DIY masks and a chance to meet real-life Luchadores showcasing their craft. This is complemented by the Craft Night on October 16 at Dobson Ranch Library, where anyone over 14 can try their hand at making papel picado, an intricate and colorful paper art. As the month nears its end, the Sugar Skulls and Candles workshop on October 29 invites participants to get hands-on in creating symbols of Dia de los Muertos, full of significance and reflection.
A closer look at the lineup in these upcoming events can be seen on Mesa's official announcement.
