Two individuals have been apprehended by the Metropolitan Police Department in connection with a series of thefts at various CVS locations within the District. According to the official MPD release, the arrests were made following incidents yesterday at a CVS situated in the 1100 block of New Jersey Avenue, Southeast, where the suspects were caught taking merchandise and subsequently fleeing.
26-year-old Anthony Dickey and 29-year-old Avon Thompson, both reportedly without stable housing, are the men charged. Dickey, to particularly note, has been linked to a string of thefts dating back to May 2019, with the MPD additionally charging him for several incidents scattered over dates in February and July. Thompson has been charged with theft offenses that occurred on July 20 and August 1, the latter just one day before their arrest.
The suspects were apprehended by responding officers after the alleged theft and now face charges of Theft Two, indicating that the property was valued at less than $1,000. In a detailed listing, MPD outlined that Dickey's additional charges span ten separate cases of Theft Two, which include felony threats, and several locations near the area of I Street, Southeast, Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast, and K Street, Northwest.
While Dickey's arrest record depicts a habitual pattern stretching several months, Thompson's charges relate narrowly to two incidents, both occurring at the same New Jersey Avenue location. The Metropolitan Police have not disclosed specific details regarding the value of the goods attempted to be pilfered or the method of theft. However, the routine persistence of thefts suggests a targeted string of crimes within specific neighborhoods. Such regularity in incidents often indicates a deeper societal issue, one not always adequately addressed simply by punitive measures.
The Metropolitan Police Department has not provided additional information on the circumstances leading up to the arrests or any related investigations. The storefronts currently remain open for business, and it is unclear at this time how these events have impacted the stores or the communities they serve. For continuous updates on this case, interested parties are encouraged to monitor the official MPD channels or check with local news sources.
