Jonathan Chavez-Galarza, a 27-year-old Mexican national, faces charges of illegal reentry into the United States after being deported for an aggravated felony, a situation shedding light on the intersection of immigration law and criminal justice. As reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota, Chavez-Galarza’s previous conviction for Second-Degree Assault with a Dangerous Weapon in Hennepin County dates back to December 5, 2018.
The indictment against Chavez-Galarza was announced by U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger and includes one count of reentry of a removed alien after an aggravated felony, the case emanated from diligent efforts by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the United States Marshals Service who contribute to the continuous, often shadowed machinery of law enforcement and immigration control.
As detailed by the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Minnesota, Chavez-Galarza had his initial court appearance on August 14, before Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Cowan Wright, signaling the beginning of what could be a lengthy legal process as the wheels of justice slowly grind forward, paced by procedure and the weight of the law.
