Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara has taken on a new role with national implications, having recently been elected Secretary of the Board of Directors for the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF). Known for being a heavyweight in research-focused law enforcement discourse, PERF aims to tackle the most complicated challenges of modern policing, and Chief O'Hara is now at its strategic helm.
"I'm honored to join a board of directors that is made up of some of the most respected law enforcement leaders in the country," said O'Hara in a statement, "I'm excited to help lead an organization that focuses on research-based solutions to many of the policing profession's most complex, and challenging issues." He also expressed confidence that his new role would greatly benefit both the department and the people of Minneapolis. The announcement of the election results was delivered to PERF's members—a network that spans over 3,000 individuals—last week.
At the forefront of PERF's mission is the development and dissemination of forward-thinking strategies for policing practices. Chief O'Hara's track record of advocating for progressive policies in Minneapolis has been recognized by PERF's Executive Director Chuck Wexler. "We are very pleased that Chief O'Hara has joined the board of directors of the Police Executive Research Forum," said Wexler. "His experience in bringing progressive policing policies to Minneapolis align with the work of PERF. Chief O'Hara brings energy, and determination to make a difference in the national conversation about policing."
The board is composed of other distinguished law enforcement figures, including Nashville's Chief John Drake as President and Sacramento's Chief Kathy Lester as Vice President. Alongside Chief O'Hara, the board welcomes Commissioner Robert Tracy from St. Louis, Chief Ana Lalley of Elgin, and Chief Johnny Jennings of Charlotte-Mecklenburg as Members-At-Large. Chief Constable Adam Palmer from Vancouver takes the role of Ex-Officio Member.
