The Minneapolis Police Department reported an unprecedented haul of illegal firearms during this year's Operation Safe Summer III. Chief Brian O'Hara said the initiative, which took place from July 29 through August 3, resulted in the confiscation of 45 firearms, surpassing the tally from the past two summers. Alongside the firearms, law enforcement also seized over 2,300 grams of narcotics, 1,200 fentanyl pills, and $10,000 in cash, as detailed by the City of Minneapolis.
Chief O'Hara praised the concerted efforts that led to the notable uptick in arrests to 98, an increase over the past two years' operations. Demonstrating a collaborative effort, the weeklong operation witnessed the partnership of various agencies including the ATF, FBI, and Metro Transit PD. Noteworthy is the fact that the arrests made, historically affected by illegal firearms and drugs, are meant to improve the safety of Minneapolis neighborhoods.
In reflection of the operations held previously, the Minneapolis Police Department reported that during the 2023 operation, 38 firearms were recovered with 100 individuals arrested, mirroring the 2022 figures. They indicate a steady yet concerted effort in dealing with the proliferation of illegal firearms—an issue entrenched within the urban fabric of the city.
