The Modesto Police Department is stepping up its efforts to curb impaired driving by holding a DUI checkpoint on Friday, August 16, from 6:30 PM to 1:30 AM. The exact location of the checkpoint has been left undisclosed, but the decision on where to conduct these operations is informed by data that targets areas with a history of DUI-related collisions.

Sergeant Robert Hall of the Modesto Police Department highlighted the importance of such measures. "Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” he said in a statement obtained by Modesto Police Department's Facebook page. He elaborated that, any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads, significantly improves traffic safety. The police are eager to remind the public that driving while under the influence pertains to more than just alcohol; prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana, despite its legality for medicinal and recreational use, can also impair drivers and are included under the DUI laws.

The stakes for those caught driving under the influence are high, with first-time offenders facing up to $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license. It's a punitive approach designed to deter individuals from making the dangerous choice to drive while impaired.

The DUI checkpoint initiative is made possible through grant funding provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Modesto Police Department's efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure the roads remain safe for everyone, driver, and pedestrian alike.
