
An unidentified motorcyclist died early Sunday morning in a traffic incident involving their motorcycle and an SUV on North MoPac Expressway, according to the Austin Police Department. The fatal collision occurred in the 8600 block of the expressway at approximately 3:38 a.m.
The preliminary investigation by APD indicates that the motorcyclist crashed into the back of the SUV, subsequently falling onto the roadway, and was then struck by an unknown vehicle. The driver of the SUV has been cooperating with authorities following the incident. Tragically, the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, while the vehicle that hit them failed to stop and fled the location.
As the investigations progress, officials underline the need for community assistance. "Anyone with any information should contact APD's Vehicular Homicide unit at 512-974-8111," the authorities stated. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program online at austincrimestoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477. Information leading to an arrest may even result in a reward of up to $1,000.
This recent tragedy marks Austin’s 45th fatal crash of the year, escalating the total number of traffic-related deaths to 48—a slight decline from 2023's figures, which stood at 53 fatal crashes and fatalities by the same date.
