Commuters on I-85 experienced significant delays on Friday morning following two separate incidents. According to NCDOT, a crash near Kannapolis necessitated the closure of all lanes on I-85 South at Exit 63, the area was projected to reopen by 10 a.m., however, congestion lingered in the vicinity as lanes reopened ahead of schedule, shortly before 8:30 a.m., WCNC reports.
While authorities managed the disruption and directed traffic, drivers were advised to use a detour, exiting at Lane Street, then turning left to join US 29 South (N Cannon Blvd) back to I-85, this stretch of I-85 near Kannapolis and Concord, is no stranger to traffic complications with Friday morning's closure exemplifying the highway's susceptibility to gridlock following such occurrences.
In a separate but equally tragic event, WCNC Charlotte confirmed the death of an individual in a crash on I-85 in Charlotte, which led to the closure of the ramp from I-85 North to Mallard Creek Church Road while an investigation was conducted.
