Murfreesboro motorists should prepare for a shift in traffic patterns as the city implements right-turn-only restrictions at the intersection of Asbury Lane and Medical Center Parkway. According to WSMV, these changes, starting the first week of September, are part of a broader strategy to improve traffic flow and safety, which have been compromised by high volumes, especially during rush hour. Public Infrastructure Division Director Chris Griffith explained that the challenge of entering Medical Center Parkway from Asbury Lane, combined with the volume of vehicles, has necessitated a redesign of traffic patterns to mitigate safety concerns.
The construction work, already underway, includes a raised median aimed at streamlining vehicle movement. With the new setup, eastbound drivers on Medical Center Parkway will now make a U-turn at Conference Center Boulevard to access Asbury Lane, as reported by WGNS Radio. Similarly, for those on Asbury Lane intending to travel east on Medical Center Parkway, the new median will prevent them from making left turns, redirecting them instead to Asbury Lane, Asbury Road, Wilkinson Pike, or Old Nashville Highway for eastward travels.
The amendments to this busy junction are considered a temporary solution until the city can execute its master plan for realignment and the redesign of the Medical Center Parkway, especially the interchange at I-24. As per the Rutherford County Source, city engineers, in collaboration with TDOT, are finalizing details for these traffic pattern upgrades, with a highlight being the new signalized intersection at Conference Center Blvd. The realignment will link Asbury Lane with Conference Center Blvd. near Williamson Farm, slated for construction in 2025.
During the interim phase, before the alignment of Asbury Lane shifts, local travelers will have to adjust to the modification to "right turns" only. This adjustment aims at enhancing safety and managing the traffic concerns that have previously plagued the area. This reconfiguration, expected to improve overall traffic flow at the interchange, will also signal the removal of the current Asbury Lane connection to Medical Center Parkway, thereby ushering in a more streamlined route for future motorists.
