An armed man was arrested on Friday night at the Marriott Town Place Suites in Wareham, Massachusetts, after firing gunshots inside his hotel room, some of which traveled through a door and a wall into an area where children were present. According to NBC Boston, Wareham Police arrived on the scene shortly after 8 p.m., following reports of possible gunshots in the bog area behind the hotel.
Hotel management informed the responding officers that the individual involved, Scott Desimas of New Bedford, had entered the hotel after being in the bog area. WCVB reports that, upon attempting to make contact with Desimas, officers were met with three gunshots fired through the hotel room door, narrowly missing them.
The ensuing gunfire not only endangered the officers but also penetrated a wall leading to the pool area, where two children and an adult were swimming. Another adult and child were by the side of the pool when sidewall material dislodged by the bullets began falling into the water, as noted by WCVB.
Police arrested Desimas without further incident, and a woman and two young children who were also in the room were safely escorted out. Desimas is facing multiple charges, including Assault to Murder and Reckless Endangerment of Children. TurnTo10 quotes Wareham Police Chief Walter Correia, Jr., stating, "No one was hit," despite the close proximity of the bullets to individuals in and around the pool area. A rifle and a handgun were recovered from the scene.
Desimas is being held on $250,000 bail and is scheduled for arraignment at the Wareham District Court, according to reports from both NBC Boston and TurnTo10. The incident remains under investigation.
