The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has announced the completion and opening of the new Lane Place Pedestrian Bridge, which crosses over DC-295. The bridge serves as a crucial link for the communities of Mayfair, Parkside, Eastland Gardens, and the neighboring areas of Ward 7, promising improved pedestrian safety and access to mass transit. The previous bridge met its demise in June 2021, when an incident with a truck led to its collapse.
Breaking ground with a notable $17 million in Federal Emergency funding, the DDOT's successful completion of the bridge is a statement of prompt action and fiscal responsibility - finishing both on time and within the allocated budget. According to the District Department of Transportation, the new structure stands as a testament to the significant strides the department is making toward enhancing district infrastructure. "The completion of the Lane Place Street Pedestrian Bridge marks a great milestone in our efforts to provide safe, accessible, and sustainable transportation options for all residents," said Sharon Kershbaum, DDOT Acting Director.
Following thorough evaluations of pedestrian bridges along DC-295, the DDOT determined that three were below standard, prompting urgent action. The replacement of the Lane Place Pedestrian Bridge, along with the Parkside and Douglas Street pedestrian bridges, ensures adherence to current specifications and augments safety measures for those traversing the infrastructure maze of DC's Ward 7.
The new Lane Place Pedestrian Bridge touts features set to modernize the pedestrian experience. This includes a minimum vertical clearance of 17’-6”, which complies with DOT standards and spans both Kenilworth Avenue Service Roads, a design to prevent the need for pedestrians to negotiate the bustling access roads below. The bridge now offers ramps that meet ADA compliance and includes access stairs, catering to a variety of users. Furthermore, enhanced LED lighting casts a bright yet efficient glow, elevating safety during nighttime passage. The improvements signify DDOT's ongoing commitment to revitalizing the city's infrastructure, prioritizing accessibility and safety for its residents.
