Border security efforts ramped up after Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Nogales, Arizona, halted a substantial amount of illegal narcotics from entering the United States this Monday. The intercept occurred at the Area Port of Nogales during a routine vehicle check when a woman driving a Dodge Ram was referred for a secondary inspection.

It was during this second stage of scrutiny, at approximately before 10 a.m., that a CBP narcotics detection canine signaled the presence of drugs in the vehicle. In a published release from CBP, officials described finding 50 packages of fentanyl pills cleverly concealed within the center hump of the front seats of said truck. The seized drugs tipped the scales at nearly 99 pounds, indicative of a disturbing trend of drug smuggling attempts along the border.

The 22-year-old female driver was taken into custody and the case has since been turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations for further probing. Guadalupe Ramirez, Director of Field Operations, praised the Nogales staff in the CBP statement, saying, “Seizures such as this one represent the relentless dedication by our personnel to prevent these dangerous drugs from reaching communities throughout the United States.”

The fate of the individual hangs in balance as Federal law stipulates that charges can be laid by complaint; This allows for the filing of charges pertaining to alleged criminal activity without implying guilt. Consequently, the woman remains innocent unless compelling evidence is brought forth in a court of law, establishing her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The drugs and vehicle were, however, processed for seizure.
