Daredevil Jared Firestone isn't shying away to share his icy aspirations with local youths, trading the frosty alpine air for South Florida's humidity as he visits the Scott Rakow Youth Center on August 6.
Firestone's sport of choice, Skeleton, sees competitors liftoff into a breath-stealing sprint before diving onto their sleds, sledding face-first down a treacherous ice track. It's a hair-raising sport that Firestone stumbled upon while battling a serious medical condition, proving that sometimes, hurdles only exist to be vaulted over. According to a post on the City of Miami Beach website, Miami Beach Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez praised the winter sportsman, stating, "We are so proud of Jared’s many accomplishments in the sport of skeleton racing and wish him great success in his quest for gold at the Milan Winter Olympics."
Demonstrating more than just the guts-and-glory routine of an Olympic dream, Firestone's story is one to kindle ambition in the young campers.
