In an effort to combat the raging Elk Lane Fire in Jefferson County, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has called upon the powers of the Emergency Conflagration Act, a move following the local fire defense board's call for assistance and subsequent approval by the state fire marshal yesterday morning. The act enables the mobilization of additional firefighting resources in an expedited manner to confront escalating fire threats with greater agility and force.
When the Elk Lane Fire erupted, quick action was taken with the deployment of two task forces from Lincoln and Polk counties; these units were already stationed in Central Oregon in anticipation of such an emergency, their presence proving invaluable as they jumped into action the moment the blaze was reported, "The two task forces we pre-positioned in Central Oregon on Friday have been busy helping several local agencies respond to wildfires including two fires that sparked moments after they arrived," Oregon State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple said in a statement. The preemptive positioning of these units exemplifies the state's shift to a more proactive response strategy aimed at curtailing fires swiftly and safeguarding community zones.
According to Jefferson County Fire District 1, the region suffered from a severe lightning storm which occasioned the fire – a situation worsened by strong winds, it was reported. The Elk Lane Fire has since swelled to around 3,000 acres, with the area bracing for continued high temperatures nearing 100 degrees and wind gusts that could potentially fan the flames further. In response, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has issued evacuation orders of varying levels to ensure resident safety, with a detailed evacuation map available for affected locals.
Further to Kotek's invocation of the Emergency Conflagration Act, the Oregon State Fire Marshal's office has not only activated its Red Incident Management Team but also called upon five structural protection task forces from multiple counties including Clackamas, Lincoln, Polk, Washington, and Yamhill, to aid in the emergency response, this was documented by the Oregon State Fire Marshal's office.
