Daniel Hernandez-Casiano, 44, of Orlando, has entered a guilty plea for illegally reentering the United States after being deported, a violation that could land him in federal prison for up to 20 years, as per an announcement by United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg. Court records reveal that Hernandez-Casiano was discovered in the country following his arrest on state charges, which included possession of fentanyl and operating a motor vehicle without a valid license. The date set for his sentencing hearing is November 4, 2024. The source of this information is the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.
Hernandez-Casiano's history with immigration authorities includes being previously deported to Mexico on three different occasions. Despite these deportations, he was found to have unlawfully returned to the U.S., only to get subsequently caught up in the justice system once again. The agencies responsible for investigating this case, Homeland Security Investigations and the United States Marshals Service, have worked together to bring forth the charges he now faces. Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie McNeff is handling the prosecution efforts.
Illegal reentry remains a challenge for law enforcement, revealing the complex link between immigration policy and criminal justice. Cases like Hernandez-Casiano’s show how people who have been removed from the country often find ways to return, sometimes multiple times.
