The Barnstable Police Department has taken into custody an 18-year-old Orleans resident, identified as Aiden Sanders, following a series of vehicle break-ins and subsequent robberies within a span of 24 hours. Sanders, hit with multiple charges including breaking and entering, larceny, unarmed robbery, and trespassing, finds himself entangled with the law yet again after his release on personal recognizance for earlier crimes.
According to details released by Barnstable Police, Sanders was initially arrested on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, for allegedly breaking into several vehicles along Main Street in Hyannis. After his release, he apparently skipped his scheduled arraignment yesterday morning and was later involved in further alleged criminal activity, as noted in a police statement on Facebook. Around 10:50 a.m. yesterday, officers responded to reports of two robberies near Beares’s Way and Route 28, where Sanders was again identified as the suspect.
Witnesses and video footage quickly led to the identification and subsequent apprehension of Sanders, who was attempting to escape on foot. Held on a $5,000 cash bail, his next court appearance is scheduled for today. The police continue to investigate the vehicle break-ins and encourage anyone who was parked in the Main Street area during the time of the initial incidents to contact Detective Christopher Botsford at 774-339-0764.
The quick cycle of Sanders' arrest, release, and re-arrest raises concerns about the bail system and the process that allows suspects to be released before their initial court appearance. The police remind us that Sanders' case is still an allegation, and all suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
