Mohamad Zineddin, a key figure in the arena of nuclear and radiological engineering, has been awarded the prestigious Roger Howsley Award for Excellence in Nuclear Security. In recognition of individual achievements in strengthening the safety and security of nuclear materials and facilities, the award was jointly presented by the World Institute for Nuclear Security and the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management. Zineddin, a respected researcher at ORNL, underscores the significance of a robust nuclear security culture across all operations.
"The effectiveness of security at nuclear sites is dependent on having a healthy nuclear safety and security culture embedded into all aspects of our day-to-day activities and interfaces with stakeholders," Zineddin observed, emphasizing the critical role that professional diligence plays in maintaining high-security standards. He manifests over thirty years of experience in his field, distinguished not only for his scholarly contributions but also for his unique perspective informed, in part, by his expertise as a 4th-degree Black Belt martial artist.
The accolade comes as a testimonial to the innovative and ethical approach Zineddin encourages in the field. In a nod to those who aspire to earn similar respect and recognition, he articulated a few central tenets: "leading projects that focus on improving the field, developing innovative solutions to address pressing challenges and upholding the highest standards of ethics and integrity," Zineddin told ORNL News. Reflecting on the personal significance of the award, he views it both as a milestone and as motivation for further endeavors.
Operational since 2023 the Facilities and Systems Security group to which Zineddin is attached, is part of ORNL's wider mission to advance nonproliferation research and policy. UT-Battelle manages ORNL on behalf of the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, which is charged with confronting some of the most daunting scientific challenges of our era. As Zineddin puts it, the acknowledgment he has received is more than just a professional honor; it's an emblem of the commitment and hard work that has driven his career thus far.
