Yesterday morning, Oxford, Mississippi, was flooded with beer after an 18-wheeler made a delivery mistake. According to Local Memphis, the accident occurred on Jefferson Ave., prompting the Oxford Police Department to shut down the stretch of road between North Lamar and North 9th Street. Cases of Bud Light, Natural Light, Modelo, Busch, Corona, and Michelob ULTRA were strewn across the street, an image of accidental abundance that stood in contrast to a normally orderly city.
The Oxford Police Department had a light-hearted approach to the incident, emphasizing with a tinge of humor that public participation in the cleanup was unnecessary. "No, you cannot come help 'clean up,'" said the OPD in a post, as reported by Local Memphis.
The spill not only attracted local attention, but it also brought to mind previous instances where Mid-South roadways had been closed for similar reasons. A past incident, as FOX13 Memphis recalled, involved an 18-wheeler dumping cans of Alfredo sauce on I-55 in Memphis last August.
Traffic was redirected as the police worked to clear the scene, which took several hours. The Oxford Police utilized social media to update the public and manage the curiosity and potential traffic disruptions caused by the spillage. Diversions were quickly put in place, and the authorities urged drivers to find alternative routes through the town while the clean-up operation was underway.
