A YMCA camp counselor has been entangled in legal troubles after being charged with possession of child pornography, according to Rhode Island State Police. The counselor, identified as 19-year-old Ryan Minasian of Pawtucket, was arrested following a digital trail that the State Police believe connected him to online sharing of illicit files. Rhode Island authorities, who executed a search warrant at Minasian's residence, assert that they found incriminating files on his digital media.
Working at the Newman YMCA in Seekonk, Massachusetts, Minasian engaged with campers throughout his seasonal employment this summer. Despite the charges leveled against him, according to WHDH, there has been no evidence brought forward to suggest misconduct with any of the campers. After his arraignment, in which the Honorable Judge Stephen Isherwood presided, Minasian was released on $2,500 surety bail and received explicit orders restricting his interaction with minors and barring unsupervised contact with them.
The case's disturbing nature was highlighted by the Greater Providence YMCA, with an official statement released to NBC Boston that described the charges as "deeply troubling." The organization confirmed that Minasian had been terminated from his position and communicated their intent to fully cooperate with law enforcement's ongoing investigation. They also assured that there was no current indication suggesting any YMCA member children were at risk.
Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any relevant information that may aid the inquiry. With the reality that a figure in a position of trust stood accused of such grave allegations, the Rhode Island State Police Internet Crimes Against Children task force has opened a pathway for tips. People with knowledge of Minasian's activities or related concerns that might contribute to this overarching probe are encouraged to contact the task force at (401) 921-1170, as reported by WCVB.
